Tampa Bay Buccaneers team history

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers came to be in 1976 as an expansion NFL team and never seemed to get out of the cellar in the 70's and late 80's. But in the mid 90's the Bucs defense just kept getting stronger and in 1996, they enjoyed a huge resurgence under coach Tony Dunge with many talented players including the colorful defensive lineman, Warren Sapp, hard nosed fullback Mike Alstott, speedy sure-handed halfback Warrick Dunn, and the not spectacular but smart quarterback Trent Dilfer. Although Dungy built the Bucs from the ground up and turned them into a winning franchise, he would be around for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers spectacular NFL Regular season and playoff run in 2003. In 2003, Jon Gruden, affectionately known as Chucky because of his resembalance to the Child's play horror movie's doll, guided this defensive minded, ground control offense to Super Bowl XXXVII and upset the then powerful football offensive juggernaut, Oakland Raiders. Tampa Bay is still known for it's defense, but the 2004-05 season will be tough as many of the players from that 2003 team, including Sapp, have signed as free agents throughout the NFL. The Buccanneers however still have a few tricks up their sleave, and are sure to be a contender in the NFC South, gunning for last year's NFC championship team, The Carolina Panthers.
