| San Francisco 49ers team history |
The San Francisco 49ers are in the NFL's NFC West division. The Niners (as their called by fans) joined the NFL
in 1950. The 49ers struggled as a new NFL franchise, but in the late 50's were able to tie the Detroit Lions for
the NFL's western division title in 1957. But that same year they lost in the NFL playoffs.
The 49ers would not taste another chance at the NFL title or Super Bowl until 1970, when they advanced to the NFC
Championship game only to be beat by Bart Starr and the Dallas Cowboys. San Fran would then lose again in 71-72 to the same
Cowboys team. Notably in 1971, the 49ers moved from Bezar stadium to Candlestick park, the stadium the 49ers still play today, although it is
it has recently been renamed 3com park. After the 70's the 49ers began to build their dynasty, where in 1979 newly hired GM Joe Walsh of Stanford
Cardinal fame drafted Joe Montana and Dwight Clark and in another good draft in 1980 Walsh selected Ronnie Lott. With Clark maturing as a wide receiver and Montana
becoming a great passes big things were starting to brew in San Francisco. The 1981 season saw the 49ers win 7 straight games and cruise through the playoffs only to
meet up again with the Dallas Cowboys in one of the more memorable games in 49ers history. Joe Montana with a short amount of time left and down in the 4th quarter sailed a
pass over the middle that looked to high to be caught, but somehow, Dwight Clark who was known for having a good reach and long arms reached up and pulled the ball in giving the 49ers
their first NFC Championship game win. The pass has been known ever since then as "The Catch". The Niners then went on to win Super Bowl XVI and in 1983 Walsh produced another good
draft, drafting full back Roger Craig, giving the 49ers a better running attack and help for Montana in the backfield. After a few years of just contention, Montana just kept getting better and in 1984 the 49ers lost
only 1 regular season game going 15-1 and crusing through the playoffs and Super Bowl where the crushed the Miami Dolphins in Super Bowl XIX. In the next 2 drafts Walsh acquired one of the best receivers of all time in Jerry
Rice and tough running back, Tom Rathman giving the Niners 2 more big time offensive threats. These additions allowed the 49ers to win 2 more super bowls in 1988 and 1989.
After an absence from Super Bowl contention and the departure of Joe Montana, Steve Young took the reigns at quarterback and led the team to a Super Bowl victory against the San Diego
Chargers in Super Bowl XXIX, making it the 5th Super Bowl win for the 49er's. After this win and Steve Young's retirement a few years later, the 49ers have not been able to dominate and are now
forced to rebuild the franchise and hopefully get back to their past Super Bowl form.
