San Diego Chargers team history

The San Diego Chargers are in the NFL's AFC West division along with the Kansas City Chiefs, Denver Broncos, and the Oakland Raiders. The Chargers became a franchise in 1960 in Los Angeles (as the Los Angeles Chargers). But financial problems led then owner Barron Hilton to move the team to San Diego where they achieved early success under head coach Sid Gilman, in 1963 the Chargers would win the AFL Championship over the Boston Patriots (now New England Patriots) and would win 5 Western Division crowns in the AFL (American Football league). Once the AFL merged with the NFL in 1970 the Chargers started struggling and would not get back to the NFL playoffs until the late 70's under quarterback Dan Fouts who threw for over 4000 yards in his career as a San Diego Charger and led the Chargers into the NFL playoffs and AFC playoffs several times, but could not get the team to a Super Bowl despite very strong defensive help in 1979. The Chargers would not reach a AFC Championship or Super Bowl until 1995 Super Bowl XXIX. In Super Bowl XXXIX the Chargers faced the 49ers with their powerful offense led by Steve Young and Jerry Rice. The Chargers who saw a career year out of then running back Natrone Means and solid year from QB Stan Humphries were no match for the Niners and were defeated 49-26 losing their only Super Bowl appearance. The current Chargers show a lot of promise with young running back ladainian tomlinson and hopefully a new standout quarterback in NC State's Philip Rivers.
