New Orleans Saints team history

THe New Orleans Saints are in the NFl's NFC South division. The City of New Orleans was awarded an NFL franchise on November 1, 1966. And in January of 67', the first owner of the team decided on the name Saints, because November 1st is "All Saints Day". THe Siants struggled as an early franchise winning sporadically throughout the 60's and 70's and were only able to finish .500 two seasons in that era, 1979 and 1983. New Orleans did not have a winning season above .500 until 1987. What really made the difference was their newest coach, Jim Mora, who was hired by owner Tom Benson to bring new life to the saints and with attention to detail and a winning/ferocious attitude he brought the Saints back to respectability. In that era from 85-92, The Saints made the playoffs four times and won the NFC West Championship 91'. Since then, the Saints have not been able to win the NFC South title, but they have had many more winning seasons under new coach Jim Haslett.
