Detroit Lions team history

The Detroit Lions are one of 4 teams in the NFC Central division of the NFL. When you hear Detroit Lions, don't you think of running back Barry Sanders. Many do, and just as many wonder why he retired so early. But there is definitely more to the Detroit Lions then just Sanders. The franchise has had many bright spots, including dominating the NFL in 1950's and several playoff berths in the mid 1990's. In the 1950's, the Lions won 4 division titles and 3 NFL championships including consecutive titles under then coach Buddy Parker in 1952-53. The 1950's teams featured several NFL Hall of fame players including Bobby Layne, Jack Christiansen, Doak Walker and Lou Creekmur, Les Bingaman, Cloyce Box, Leon Hart and Bob Hoernschemeyer. In the 70's the Lions moved to Pontiac Michigan, playing in the Silverdome, one of the largest stadiums in the world. The Silverdome is in stark contrast to the Lions newest 500 million downtown Detroit stadium, Ford Field, not only is Ford Field reserved exclusively for NFL football, but it seats substantially less occupants and features real grass. The stadium also is located in downtown Detroit, whereas the Silverdome was located 30 miles outside in Pontiac, MI.
