| Denver Broncos team history |
The Denver Broncos are in the NFL's AFC West diviosn along with the Kansas City Chiefs,
Oakland Raiders, and San Diego Chargers. In 1960 the Broncos franchise was formed in the now defunct
AFL (American Football League). The Broncos would struggle as a franchise losing more games then they won and they didn't even make the NFL Playoffs
up until the mid 70's. in 1977, Denver clinched its first playoff berth, going 12-2 and winning the NFC Western Division title going away.
The main reason for this was their famous "Orange Crush" defense, with the now famous, Lyle Alzado, LB Randy Gradishar, and LB Tom Jackson.
The Broncos would win the 1978 AFC title against the Oakland Raiders, but their offense just couldn't get the job done in Super Bowl XII, turning over the ball 8 times
they lost the game going away 27-10. The next year, The Broncos would also lose in the playoffs to one of the all time greatest Pittsburgh Steelers team's with their fabled
Iron Curtain Defense and Terry Bradshaw. in 1983 the Broncos drafted future Hall of Fame quarterback John Elway starting the Elway era for the Broncos. in 1987 this move would payoff, as
Elway led the Broncos to Super Bowl XXI against the New York Giants. The Broncos led at half time against Giants but they could not hold on, losing in Super Bowl XXI 39-20.
The next year, the Broncos would make it back to Super Bowl XII only to run into one of the best games ever played by a Super Bowl quarterback. After jumping out to a quick
10-0 lead the Broncos got annihilated by the Redskins Quarterback Doug Williams, who led his team to a 35 point 2nd quarter rout and an eventual 35-10 final score. The following year the Broncos would miss the big game, but
made it back to the Super Bowl in 1990 in Super Bowl XIV. In that Super Bowl, the Broncos would lose one of the most lopsided Super Bowl contests in history getting crushed by the passing game of Joe Montana to Jerry Rice combo
55-10. The Broncos would not earn a trip to the Super Bowl until 1998 where they battled the defending champion Green Bay Packers and Brett Favre. The one thing that separated the 97-98 Broncos team from
other Broncos teams with Elway, was their excellent running game which enabled Elway to have another weapon to help his offensive lead. In that game, the Broncos were able to hold onto a 24-17 victory with good
defense down the stretch and 3 touchdown runs by their pro bowl running back Terrell Davis. Elway and the Broncos finally won a Super Bowl and they weren't finished. In the 1998-99 season the Broncos would win
another AFC Championship and cruise to another Super Bowl victory, this time against the underdog Atlanta Falcons coached by former coach and foe of Elway, Dan Reeves. Elway would retire after this victory, and what a way to go, winning 2 straight
Super Bowl Championships and becoming a true champion in Denver and NFL playoff history.
