Atlanta Falcons team history

The Atlanta Falcons are in the NFL's NFC South division. Atlanta was awarded an NFL franchise in 1966 after several failed attempts before then to secure the city one. One of determining factors was Atlanta finally had a professional facility to house an NFL team, and the city showed it setting an NFL for season ticket holder signups at 45,000. Throughout the 60's and 70's the Falcons struggled to make the NFL playoffs. The Falcons wouldn't make the playoffs until 1978, in which they upset the Philadelphia Eagles in the first round, but lost to the Super Bowl Winning Dallas Cowboys in the 2nd round. The Falcons would again lose to the same Cowboy team the following year. Almost 20 years later, the Falcons would produce one of their, if not their best season of all time. They went 12-4 winning the NFC West and in the NFC Championship game under the guidance of Chris Chandler and sure foot of Morten Andersen they upset the highly powered offense of the Minnesota Vikings. The Vikings had a chance to win the game with time expiring but their kicker, Gary Andersen, who had made 122 consecutive kicks at the time, botched a 47 yard field goal and the Falcons advanced to Super Bowl XXXIII where they lost to John Elway and the Denver Broncos.
